goldfish turns tide on memory myth

sunday times, january 29, 2006

"they are said to have a memory span of three seconds, but you can forget that myth."
oh really?

"despite having brains that weigh only a tenth of a gram, they are capable of remembering and learning and they beat trout in intelligence."
wow, trout must be stupid.

the next thing we must ask ourselves is WHO THE HELL RESEARCHES THIS KIND OF STUFF?

"the findings were made by scientists at Queen's university, belfast. researcher rachel dunlop looked at how goldfish and trout reacted when given electric shocks in a tank"
oh, there's the answer.

and if you're worried about animal cruelty...
"the experiments, which complied with animal welfare rules, were done in a tank divided into three sections."
so no worries, eh.

""fish have been regarded as driven by instinct and reflex. this study shows that fish learn to avoid a painful stimulus based on spatial clues and show evidence of spatial memory." says rachel dunlop."
you know, this means that goldfish are not only smarter than trout, they're smarter than humans too.

"behind the glassy eyed stare of the goldfish lie hidden depths, research shows."
hmm... wonder if this excuse would work for me.
